Signs of lottery showing up in N.C.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- Signs of the lottery in North Carolina are showing up in our area.

State officials plan to sell the first ticket March 30. Thursday a Castle Hayne store had their lottery machine installed.

There are more than 60 lottery terminal installation teams putting machines into place across the state. Thursday morning a Kangaroo station in Castle Hayne got theirs.

G-tech is the company contracted by the state to do the job. The goal for North Carolina education lottery officials is 100-125 installations each day. There's some debate in Raleigh between the governor and some lawmakers over where the money raised will go, but for companies like the Pantry Incorporated, which runs the Kangaroos, there's not much to debate. They expect more customers and a guarantee 7 percent of each lottery ticket sold.

Sandy Young from the Pantry Incorporated said, "We're just in the process of getting everybody trained 100 percent to the fullest to give good customer service out there."

And there's a lot of training to do before the first ticket is sold. Store employees will have to learn the right way to sell tickets and how to validate them. G-tech will begin training retailers the middle of March. On March 30 they plan to sell scratch off tickets and on May 30 North Carolina will join the Powerball.
