Beebe again rejects casino, lottery plan

A Texas businessman’s attempt to bring casino gambling and a lottery to Arkansas was rejected Friday for a second time by Arkansas Attorney General Mike Beebe.

Beebe rejected the revised language of a proposed constitutional amendment submitted by Michael Wasserman, who owns Arkansas Resorts and Hotels. Wasserman wants to get the measure on the Nov. 7 ballot.

The proposal calls for building and operating casinos in Boone, Crittenden, Garland, Jefferson, Miller, Pulaski and Sebastian counties. It also would have created a statewide lottery.

Beebe’s office had rejected the proposed ballot title in February. Beebe cited unclear language in the proposal Friday as the reason for rejecting it.

Certification by Beebe’s office is the first step in getting a proposal on the ballot. Wasserman would then need to collect 80, 570 voter signatures.
