Bancroft group splits $17M jackpot

Fourteen employees of a Tim-Br Mart store in Bancroft are each getting $1.2 million after winning a $17 million jackpot in the Super 7 lottery.

It was laughter all around as 12 of the workers, including co-owners Steven and Scott Wilson, were at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. office in Toronto Monday to collect their winnings from the April 7 draw.

At the forefront was Gail Reeves, the store’s “window lady” who has been responsible for buying the group ticket every week for the past five years.

“I always told them I had a good feeling that we were going to win some time,” Reeves said. “I just didn’t know when.

“It’s not enough that we are going to retire, but yes, it’s going to make our retirement a lot nicer when we do retire,” she said.

Reeves said her spending wishes, like those of her colleagues, are modest and include paying off her children’s’ mortgages. The most extravagant wish among the group came from John Hales, who said he wants to buy a red convertible.

For now at least, the Wilson brothers - who own the store east of Algonquin Park, along with the husband of one of the other winners - said none of the workers has indicated they intend to quit.

“I don’t think so,” Steven Wilson said. “We have great employees. They’ve been really faithful to the company over the years and we’re just happy for everybody.”
