Elderly lotto winner says he can retire

An elderly man from the Mornington Peninsula, south-east of Melbourne, says he will finally retire after winning more than $1 million in Tattslotto.

The man, aged in his 70s, who did not want to be identified, said he would have been happy to win $365,000 when he was notified on Monday of his $1,365,000 windfall after he was one of three entries to select the winning numbers in Saturday night's draw.

"I would have been happy with just the $365,000," he said.

"I have played Tattslotto every week since it started (in June 1972), apart from one week when I went to the football instead of getting a ticket."

He missed out on the major prize that week, but he said "this more than makes up for it".

Tattersall's spokesman Gerry Devine said the winner lived in a small town on the Mornington Peninsula and ran his own business.

The winner said he intended to share his new found wealth with his family.

"Fortunately I have got a large grown up family so there will be plenty to do with all this money," he said.

"I am in my 70s now, so I will probably retire."

The man, who submitted his winning entry at Towerhill Lotto in Frankston, shared the division one prize pool with two other entries from NSW and Western Australia.
