HICKORY - Catawba County folks bought about $200,000 in lottery tickets in the first week.

Total lottery ticket sales for the week of May 28 to June 3, including scratch-offs, were $227,487.

“It’s probably safe to say that about 98 percent of that was Powerball sales,” said Alice Garland, spokeswoman for the N.C. Education Lottery.

One local retailer is showing brisk Powerball ticket sales.

“It’s picking up with every drawing,” said Max Thomas, manager of the Southern Convenience Texaco on U.S. 321 North. “Thursday and Friday customers are getting paid and thinking about Powerball.”
