People continue to hope and scratch -- with lottery tickets.

The California State Lottery reported record sales of $3.56 billion for the just-completed fiscal year, a 7 percent increase from last year. Public schools will receive $1.26 billion, the sixth-consecutive year of $1 billion or more.

The state-run Scratchers games generated $1.9 billion, a 10 percent increase from last year. SuperLotto Plus and Mega Millions combined accounted for $1.18 billion, benefiting from eight $200 billion-plus Mega Millions jackpots since the game debuted in June 2005. Four tickets purchased in California were Mega Millions jackpot winners, including a $315 million payout on Nov. 15.

Fantasy 5, Daily 3, Hot Spot and Daily Derby brought in $470 million last year.

The 18,500 businesses that offer Lottery games and tickets -- from convenience stores to doughnut shops -- earned a record $251 million based on jackpots.

The state lottery has reported sales of almost $50 million since it started in 1986. At least 50 percent of sales must be distributed to prize payouts. Schools have received $18 billion over the past 20 years.
