(09/13/06 - RALEIGH) - Gov. Mike Easley named energy executive John McArthur chairman of the state lottery commission Wednesday, a day after Charles Sanders left the post.

McArthur, a Progress Energy executive and former chief counsel to Easley when he was attorney general, will oversee a lottery that began amid controversy but went on to generate more than $400 million since ticket sales started in March.

McArthur was one of five members originally appointed by Easley to the nine-member commission.

Easley appointed Sanders in September 2005 to a one-year term that expired Aug. 31. In a message released Tuesday by the North Carolina Education Lottery, Sanders said he told Easley at the time of his appointment that he planned only to serve on the commission for a year.

Easley also announced Wednesday that he had reappointed Crime Control and Public Safety Secretary Bryan Beatty to the commission. Beatty's term also was originally for one year and expired at the end of last month.
