(Raleigh, NC) September 20, 2006 - Former North Carolina lottery commissioner Kevin Geddings pleaded not guilty Wednesday morning as his federal trial on nine counts of corruption-related fraud began.

Prosecutors accuse Geddings of failing to disclose to ethics officials that he had been paid nearly $229,000 over several years by a lottery contractor that wanted to do business with the state.

He is the former chief of staff to South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges and later moved to North Carolina.

Geddings faces up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines on each count. He says he has rejected several plea offers from the US attorney's office. Geddings says he's looking forward to a trial.

He moved to Florida after his indictment and works at his wife's St. Augustine radio station
