Brown County Sheriff warns about lottery scam

GEORGETOWN, Ohio (LI) -- The Brown County Sheriff is warning area residents of an Internet-based scam involving the Spanish Sweepstake Lottery.

A Brown County resident informed the sheriff's department of the scam after he received a solicitation to buy into the lottery and then sent in a small amount of money to enter.

Several weeks later, the subject received an award notification in the mail. The letter informed him that he and a few others had won a large amount of money.

The subject was then required to send in money to start the claim process. The "lottery" also asked for bank account information so money could be wired to the victim's bank account.

The subject became leery of the company and decided to check into the matter. He found several articles published on the Internet about the scam, going on since 2004.

Sheriff Dwayne Wenninger warns the public to beware of any scams that are asking for bank account information or for payments in advance to receive winnings. "If it looks too good to be true, it usually is", Wenninger said.
