Man sought in scam involving claim of winning lottery ticket

Santa Clara County sheriff's deputies are looking for a man who apparently scammed a Fremont man out of a ``substantial amount'' of money last week by claiming he had a winning lottery ticket.
The suspect approached the Fremont man at his home at 2 p.m. Wednesday and told the man he had won money in the California lottery, Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department spokesman Deputy Serg Palanov said. He claimed to need money for a family emergency and told the man he could have the ticket at a discount if the man would pay him in cash.
The man called the California Lottery to verify that the other man had the actual winning numbers, then agreed to get the cash, Palanov said. He said deputies are still investigating whether the ticket was a fake and would not reveal how much money the man agreed to pay.
The two drove in the Fremont man's car to the Fremont branch of Technology Credit Union, where the man withdrew part of the payment, Palanov said. They then drove to the credit union's Cupertino branch, where the man withdrew the rest of the cash.
As the two sat in the Fremont man's car, the suspect then grabbed the money and ticket and ran away, Palanov said.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic man between 33 and 35 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 170 pounds, with black hair and a light complexion. He was cleanshaven and wore a tan, short-sleeved dress shirt and light beige pants at the time of the robbery.
