SD Attorney General Warns Of Lottery Scam

Monday, October 30, 2006 posted 10:26 AM EST

Attorney General Larry Long says an old foreign lottery scam with a new look is making the rounds. He says the latest version shows up by mail, and the prize comes by way of a simple request for a bank routing number.

Long says one South Dakotan got an unmarked envelope that says she won a lottery based in Italy. It asked her for information such as birth date, occupation, bank name and bank account numbers.

The letter claims she was awarded 780-thousand dollars and asks her to contact her "claims agent" by e-mail and fax the payment processing form to the agent.

There's just one catch: According to Long, foreign lottery promotions are illegal and a violation of federal law.
