Lawsuit Wants Lottery Sellers Handicapped Accessible

An advocacy group is suing the DC government because many of the District's licensed lottery ticket sellers are not handicapped-accessible.

The federal lawsuit by Equal Rights Center, an advocacy organization for the disabled, was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court.

The complaint says that according to D.C. law, city officials must make sure businesses are accessible before they give them licenses to sell lottery tickets.

The group seeks to prevent the District from renewing or issuing licenses for inaccessible locations.

Disabled people wishing to buy lottery tickets often have to travel for miles and incur extra costs to find somewhere that is accessible to wheelchairs. More than half of the 450 licensed sellers the group checked out had stairs or other barriers preventing a wheelchair from entering.
